STEEP

The morning paper, poured daily

Every great morning in Gilroy starts with a pour.

Single-origin espresso. Ceremonial matcha. Fresh boba, made daily.

Five minutes off the 101, and worth every one of them. STEEP is a neighborhood tea and coffee house on Monterey Street, where the beans are roasted for us weekly, the matcha is whisked by hand, and the pearls are cooked in small batches all day long. Small-batch drinks, made to order by people who care.

STEEP exists because Gilroy deserves drinks made with the same care found in the city, without the drive. Beans roasted for us weekly, matcha whisked by hand, pearls cooked in small batches all day. Quality is the whole idea.

That care shows up in small ways. The espresso is one origin at a time, dialed in every morning before the doors open, and re-dialed when the weather turns. The matcha is ceremonial grade, stone-ground, and whisked for each cup rather than poured from a pitcher. The boba is cooked every three hours because pearls that sat since breakfast are not pearls anyone should be served.

The room was built for staying. A long table for the laptop crowd, a window counter for the people-watchers, and a corner where the same three retirees have argued about the Giants since the week we opened. Nobody gets hurried out. The only rule is that the second drink tastes as good as the first.

We are on Monterey Street, two blocks from the station, with the pot already on. Come have an opinion with us.
